You are the minister of energy

Powerplay is the energy game in which you, as minister of energy, make choices for the energy system of Groenerwaard. Every choice affects the CO₂ emissions, affordability and security of supply of Groenerwaard. Which choices will you make?

Learning by playing

Powerplay is an online and offline serious game developed by, among others, the public state-owned company Gasunie N.V. and partners who believe it is important to increase understanding of the energy system and the complexity of the energy transition. Powerplay offers a realistic, fact-based and neutral perspective on the challenges of the energy system of today and the future.

As Minister of Energy in the fictional country of Groenerwaard, you as a player have an important mission: reduce CO₂ emissions while keeping energy available and affordable. How do you do this? You decide for yourself by making the right (and timely) choices. But be aware, every choice has an impact. Including on your popularity as minister of energy. Powerplay uses neutral Energy Transition Model data (ETM data) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) model on how renewable energy can best be used.

Sustainability

Reduce CO₂ emissions and keep the lights on at the same time. Powerplay shows why there is no single solution to the energy transition.

Energy security

Reliable energy is indispensable for our modern society. Experience how supply, demand and infrastructure interact and what happens when the balance is disrupted.

Affordability

Every energy decision has a price. Players learn to weigh up the costs and benefits of the energy transition.

Trusted by frontrunners

From energy companies to educational institutions, Powerplay is used by organisations that are at the forefront of the transition.

Based on real data

Powerplay is based on the Energy Transition Model (ETM) by Quintel, an independent and validated data model used by governments, grid operators and energy experts. The model is complex but complete and gives users the ability to work out different energy transition scenarios. Based on this data, Powerplay has made a translation into the game; click here for our data accountability.

Realistic data

Powerplay's calculation model uses up-to-date figures on energy generation, energy demand and CO₂ emissions in the Netherlands.

Independent

Powerplay's calculation model is based on the ETM to ensure that there is no bias in our game. Get in touch with us to check it yourself.

Real scenarios

Just like in real life, Powerplay also has unexpected events that affect the energy system, such as geopolitics or the weather.

What players and partners say

From classroom to boardroom, Powerplay lets you experience how complex it is to keep the energy system in balance and the residents satisfied.

Really cool game. I wasn't really familiar with the energy transition yet, but I now definitely have a better picture of it!

What appeals to me about Powerplay is that you experience for yourself how complex the energy system is and how crucial system integration is. By making choices and immediately seeing the consequences, you understand why there are no simple solutions.

I vote left and have solar panels on my roof, but otherwise I have no idea what the consequences of my sustainable choices are. By playing the game I quickly found out: everything comes with a price tag! Before I knew it, I was knocked out of the game for running out of budget! So this game is very educational.
